Experience a Day in Kyoto, As If You Were Living in a Machiya
The guest rooms at Ryokan Hanaya make use of the traditional Japanese-style rooms that have remained within this approximately 100-year-old Kyoto machiya townhouse.
There are just two guest rooms at Hanaya: Kiku-no-Ma on the first floor and Ume-no-Ma on the second floor.
Each room is reserved exclusively for one guest party, offering a quiet and private stay in this historic machiya.
From the rooms, you can look out onto two gardens — an inner garden and a rear garden. Open the shoji screens and traditional sliding doors, and you can feel the gentle breeze flowing through the machiya.
The experience here is a little different from staying at a hotel with luxurious modern facilities. Instead, you can experience a slower pace of life, reminiscent of Kyoto as it once was.
Sit on the tatami, look out into the garden, and simply take your time.

About the Guest Rooms at Hanaya
Hanaya is a small inn limited to just two guest parties per day, housed in a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse that was once home to a kimono merchant and is approximately 100 years old.
Because we have preserved as much of the original building as possible, there are some aspects of Hanaya that differ from those of a modern hotel.
We kindly ask that you understand some of the characteristics of staying in a traditional machiya, including its sound insulation and bathroom facilities.
In return, we hope you will enjoy the unique atmosphere and experience that can only be found in an old Kyoto townhouse.
Due to the structure of the building, Hanaya is entirely non-smoking.
Two Guest Rooms, Each with Its Own Character
Kiku-no-Ma, on the first floor, is close to the garden.
Ume-no-Ma, on the second floor, overlooks the garden.
Both rooms make use of the original spaces within Hanaya’s machiya, allowing you to experience the character of the traditional house itself.
After a day of walking through the streets of Kyoto, return to your room and sit on the tatami.
Look out into the garden and simply enjoy having nothing to do.

Bathroom
As we have preserved the traditional layout of the machiya, the bathroom is located outside the guest rooms and is shared.
For your privacy, the bathroom can be used exclusively by one guest party at a time.
A lock is also provided, allowing you to enjoy your bath in private.
Shower Room
Guests staying in Ume-no-Ma on the second floor have access to a private shower room.
The shower room is located on the mezzanine level, just down from the second-floor guest room.
